I keep hearing of something referred to as FUE 2. Can you explain what this is?
A variety of terms have been used for the follicular unit extraction technique with some surgeons seeking to capitalize on proprietary names to make it seem like they do something special. The reality is that follicular unit extraction involves the standard procedure of the individual extraction of follicular units through a very careful and delicate technique. It is a technique that few surgeons specialize in but when performed properly, the results can be quite effective with a very good rate of growth. There are some motorized devices that can be used that help with the extraction process and in certain cases we do utilize them. I personally do not like the totally automated FUE devices which have been actively promoted as improving the results of FUE procedures when in reality there is absolutely no evidence proving this. Performed properly, the follicular unit extraction technique can yield nice results.Posted by Jeffrey S. Epstein, MD, FACS
