Eyebrow transplantation

You often doesn't realize the full impact that eyebrows can make on the total facial presentation until you see a person without them. Eyebrow loss can make an individual feel very self-conscious about his or her appearance, and hair transplantation can often restore eyebrows and at the same time, self-confidence.

Hair transplantation has been used successfully for many years to fill out patchy or partial eyebrows, to restore absent eyebrows, and even camouflage scars along the eyebrow area.

Information, Photos, and Stories about Eyebrow Transplant procedures

Eyebrow hair loss can occur for several reasons, and are most commonly associated with the following:

  • Physical trauma, such as a car accident or thermal, chemical or electrical burns.
  • Systemic or local disease.
  • Excessive plucking, typically to reshape the eyebrow.
  • Trichotillomania (TTM), or self-inflicted obsessive plucking of the eyebrows.
  • Medical or surgical treatments like radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or the surgical removal of a tumor.
  • Genetics

Certain causes of hair loss like systemic or local disease or TTM must be successfully treated before undergoing hair transplantation. Scar tissue resulting from trauma, burns or surgery may require reconstructive surgery before undergoing eyebrow hair transplantation.

Eyebrow hair transplantation is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and postoperative complications are usually limited to minor discomfort and occasional swelling.

For this procedure, a very small strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from a donor area on the scalp. The area of the scalp to be used is based upon the appropriateness of the texture and orientation of the hair. Donor hair that is fine rather than coarse usually is easier to work with, but all types of hair from all ethnic groups (including those of african descent) can be utilized and look good if aesthetically placed.

Once the strip of hair-bearing skin is removed, grafts are then created from this strip using microscopes to assure the very finest grafts. Micrografts containing one and occasionally two hairs are then placed into carefully made incisions along the eyebrow site. Every incision is made personally by Dr. Epstein whom has performed hundreds of these procedures. The use of micrografts or single hairs will allow for a more natural appearance of the eyebrows. When as many as 250 to 375 single hairs are placed into one eyebrow in one procedure, the results can be a full and natural appearing eyebrow.

Following the procedure, and as the transplanted hairs grow into their new position, occasional trimming is required, and occasionally hair may need to be trained with gel.
